A solar fountain pump is, for many, the best pump option for powering a fountain. For the most part, solar pumps are used in the same fashion as regular fountain pumps. The difference is that there is no need to plug the pump into an electrical outlet. As a result, increased energy costs are not an issue.

•Battery - Many solar fountain pumps do not come with a battery. This means that they will not run at night, only when the sun is out. Few will work on stormy, overcast days. It is possible, however, to get a battery upgrade.

•Submersion – The pump should never be run unless it is fully submersed in water. The fountain may need to be refilled often to maintain a proper water level. It is wise to turn the fountain off entirely when leaving town for an extended period of time.

•Cleaning – The fountain should be cleaned regularly, at least four times a year. Algae growth can clog the pump.

•Shade - The pump can be kept in the shade, as long as the solar panel is placed where it will receive the most direct sunlight possible.

Because the solar fountain pump is not hooked into the electrical grid, it does not run off of nonrenewable resources. It also does not release any harmful emissions. Rest assured that solar fountain pumps have no adverse effects on the environment.

In addition to this, the lack of wiring means that the solar pump may be placed in any desired location. It is even possible to keep it running at a remote cabin in the woods. The fact that it is low maintenance would benefit this as well.
